esc key not working windows

Since the dawn of computers, the Escape key on a keyboard has been the standard get-out key for computer software.

This was a simple way to leave many scenarios on a computer, but in the last ten years, developers have begun to focus on usability aspects, and having a single key on the keyboard that can terminate an application if pushed by accident is a major issue.

We'll go through how to troubleshoot the Escape key in Windows 10 in various scenarios in this article.

What can I do if the ESC key won’t work on Windows 10?

1_Check your driver

The keyboard driver converts keyboard input into information that the operating system can understand. Different software or viruses can corrupt drivers, just like any other computer file.

If the installed driver isn't fully compatible with the new version, this can also happen when you upgrade or downgrade your operating system.

Update drivers automatically

Using an automatic program to update drivers on a Windows machine is the safer and easier option. DriverFix comes highly recommended.

It automatically detects and matches each device on your computer with the most recent driver versions from a large web database. As a result, your system will be safe against incorrect driver versions being downloaded and installed.

In three simple steps, you may update your drivers automatically:

1_ DriverFix is available for download and installation.

2_ Once installed, the application will automatically search your computer for outdated drivers.

3_ After the scan is completed, you will receive a report detailing any driver issues or updates that are required. All you have to do now is check the boxes next to the drivers you wish to install, or just click the Update All button at the top to have all recommended updates installed automatically.

Update the driver manually

Uninstalling the current driver and having Windows reinstall it is the technique we generally recommend to try to resolve this:

  • Device Manager may be accessed by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting it.
  • Expand the Keyboards list and, as seen in the figure below, right-click on your present keyboard and select Uninstall.

  • On the following dialogue, click OK to confirm this.

Restart your computer after removing the keyboard from the list to reload your operating system and force it to detect the keyboard. It will then reinstall the driver, perhaps resolving the issue.

Note: NEWER USB KEYBOARDS ARE MORE COMPLEX THAN OLDER KEYBOARDS. You will need to install the driver provided by the manufacturer in order to use them to their full capacity.

2. Check for viruses

Bitdefender

The Esc key not working could be a symptom of a larger malware problem, therefore it's a good idea to conduct a thorough antivirus scan on your computer.

However, if you're using a free or limited solution, you may not be able to remedy this issue. As a result, we recommend Bitdefender Antivirus Plus as the finest security solution.

Bitdefender is installed on more than 500 million computers throughout the world, which is a strong endorsement of its quality and capabilities.

This professional solution will safeguard your computer against all types of threats, including viruses, Trojans, and worms, zero-day exploits, rootkits, ransomware, and adware.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus will stop assaults before they begin thanks to its built-in cyber threat intelligence technology.

It also uses behavioral detection to monitor apps, and if it finds anything questionable, it takes action to avoid infections.

Bitdefender not only scans for threats but also looks for security gaps and vulnerabilities in your system to get things closer to perfection.

It detects obsolete and insecure software, uninstalled security patches, and other potentially dangerous settings, and then advises you on how to resolve the issues.

The price includes the Bitdefender Computer Tune-up utility that will turn your computer into a well-oiled machine.

3. Use SHIFT + Escape

As I mentioned in the first paragraph, the simplicity with which the Escape key might be pressed by accident in the past caused a slew of issues.

As a result, the Shift + Escape key combination is now used by the majority of contemporary applications.

Google Chrome, for example, gives you access to its internal task manager by pressing the SHIFT + ESC buttons together, as shown in the figure below.

4. Test your keyboard

The issue isn't always with the operating system, but rather with the hardware. Keyboards and mice are the most frequently used and mistreated input devices on a computer, which means they break more frequently than other components.

If your keyboard is connected to your computer through USB or PS/2, you can remove it and reinstall it on another computer. This will allow you to determine whether the issue is with your computer or the keyboard.

You might alternatively attach a different keyboard to your computer and use the Escape key on that one. Alternatively, you could just get a new keyboard.

5.Run the keyboard troubleshooter

  1. To troubleshoot, go to Settings, then Update & Security, then Troubleshoot on the left-hand panel.
  2. Go to this page: Other issues should be identified and resolved.
  3. Select the keyboard troubleshooter, then run it to see if the ESC key works.

9.Check the keyboard for dust or foreign matter

Make sure there's no dust, debris, or other foreign stuff on your keyboard. You may just turn it upside down to allow any dust or debris to fall out.

You may also blow dust out of the crevices on your keyboard with compressed air. You can disassemble the keyboard if you're a tech whiz.

Keep in mind, though, that this method could void the manufacturer's warranty, so proceed at your own risk.

If the methods above don't work, please leave a detailed description of your problem in the comments box below, and we'll do our best to assist you.
